Jungle Vine: The “Jealous” Band
During the recent One World Beat event at Tokyo Joe’s Blues Bar, there was this “You had to be there” moment worth mentioning on these pages.
Jeff T had arranged the first night’s schedule as a night for something different. This gave us the opportunity to see Steve Barnett, Stranded and Innuendoes who usually play at other clubs. They were all great. The moment came during the second act of the evening when the band named “Jealous” stepped onto the stage and its lead Thai singer, Kai, introduced themselves.
“We are Jealous. We are a metal band,” he said nervously.
Kai’s words, however, came across more like a question than a band introduction—or as to give us a fair warning, a chance for us to inform them there has been a bad mistake. Tokyo Joe’s is a blues bar, not a Thai Underground function where they normally jam.
The room went totally silent as everyone waited in anticipation, and yet no one was prepared for what happened.
Jealous exploded in a wall of metal music noise. Kai’s screaming was backed up by some fine hard metal music with a touch of blues. Jore and Joe, the lead and bass guitarists, could play with the best guitarists in Bangkok. The drummer, Whan, should be nicknamed the “jackrabbit” as even Jeff T pointed out how fast and long he keep pounding the drums. It was loud and yet their music sounded great.
