Enlightened Planet Promises Jazz Fans A Wake Up Call

Zen Deltas column about Jazz in BangkokA Listen Up! column by Zen Delta
Local jazz promoter Enlightened Planet has dug deep again to bring us Mark de Clive-Lowe…”the man behind a million great tunes” and perhaps provide a wake-up call to jazz fans that things might just be a-changin’, as the world of jazz breathes easy still after ‘punk-jazz’ failed to make it out of East End lock-ups!

The man behind the “million tunes’ quote was Gilles Peterson, a Radio 1 Worldwide DJ. And he should know.

Half Japanese, half New Zealander musician/producer Mark de Clive-Lowe has been on the journey through the valleys and plains of the world of music since starting piano when he was four.

Classical piano lessons, jazz for playing pleasure and hip hop and soul on the stereo gave Mark the diverse foundation for his eclectic style.

Mark’s musical journeying has taken him to the US, UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Cuba. Performing and recording in different settings and collaborating with DJ/producers, turntablists, acoustic jazz artists, Japanese Kagura, and the world of latin rhythms, Mark has become a figure in the nu-jazz movement, blending jazz, ethnic music and urban grooves into a fresh 21st century pastiche.

West London based, Mark is a collaborator, artist and producer in the scene spear-headed by Bugz in the Attic, 4Hero, Restless Soul and IG Culture [NSM]. (err…who?) His debut LP Six Degrees [Universal Jazz/emarcy] was released worldwide in 2000 - and signatured with an amalgamation of jazz sensibilities and urban influences, the album found a niche with DJs, critics and audiences worldwide.

His latest CD ‘Tide’s Arising’ [ABB Soul/Antipodean/Columbia Japan] was one of the standout releases of 2005, and the live tour which followed covered the world, from London to Cape Town, from Moscow to Jakarta, from Tokyo to New York.

“Firmly at the front of the nu-skool jazz and beats movement,” The Times of London jazz critic said, and we are about to find out for ourselves, right here live on stage in Bangkok.

See you there!
