Open wide and sing!

The Jungle Vine Column in Bangkok ThailandThe “Jungle Vine” column by Robert Lorimor
I had the pleasure of attending CoCo York’s voice clinic Thursday at Tokyo Joe’s, Sukhumvit Soi 24. We got a chance to hear some new talent who became noticeably better after following CoCo’s instructions. About 15 people attended to learn from CoCo. Jeff T. translated for the Thai students. The free clinic continues today and everyone is still welcome to come by and learn a few things about singing.

I have prepared short list of notes from the topic covered on the first day.

  1. Relax, but do not forget about yourself. Walk onto the stage and be in character.
  2. Open wide and us all of the space. By opening your mouth wider you can get better and louder sound from your voice.
  3. Move around. Cannot sing if you are constricted.
  4. Breathe from the bottom of your stomach. Practice this until it becomes second nature.

  • O’reilly’s on Silom Road is looking for two bands for Friday and Saturday night.
  • The live streaming audio from 98.5 Breeze FM is working now. Try it at www.985breezefm.com
  • Yes it is true. Jimmy Smith, who we Zen Delta wrote about in his Listen Up! column died this year on February 9, 2005. We all missed this news as the Tsunami stories were still getting headlines. National Public Radio has the story.
  • NPR also has this story about Robert Plant and his new Mighty Rearranger album. Be sure to listen to the streaming audio. As Plant tells the interviewer, he says there is a very close link between North Africa and the Mississippi Delta blues.
  • My Thai friends were excited to tell me they saw me on TV while I shoot pictures at the Bangkok Music Festival last weekend at Rajamangala National Stadium. This is easy to explain, I didn’t see another ‘farang’ there; so, much for the TAT for publicly promoting this event as a tourist attraction.
  • Absolute 7, Sukhumvit Soi 7/1, is looking for 5 bands to play at their club.
