Ringo: No More ‘Medicine Years’

Mr & Ms StarrRingo Starr says he’s concerned for troubled British singer Amy Winehouse, who is seemingly struggling publicly with a substance abuse problem. Starr spoke of the multiple Grammy-nominee telling Time: “God bless Amy. She’s a great talent. And she’s going through a situation right now. It’s a very public destruction… The good news is that there’s a lot more help around now than there was.”

Starr’s good friend and former Paul Revere and the Raiders guitarist Keith Allison spoke about Starr’s own sobriety. Next year marks 20 years since Starr and his wife Barbara Bach entered rehab and became clean and sober.

“We spent so many years in the dark, during what I refer to as ‘the medicine years.’ The blinds were drawn and when the sun started coming up everybody was like a bunch of Draculas running for cover. Not any more. We both love the light… Rehab unlocked Ringo’s emotions. Now it can’t get real enough for him. We talk about everything imaginable.”

Starr’s 15th solo album Liverpool 8 will be released on January 15th.
