The ants moved in

The Jungle Vine Column in Bangkok ThailandThe “Jungle Vine” column by Robert Lorimor
The ants in my house have moved into my camera. Yes, that’s right! I had left my Olympus E-20 camera alone for only two days and when I picked up the camera on Monday, I was surprised to find ants crawling under the glass in the menu display. This cannot be good. We tried shaking them out, luring them out, smoking them out. I was tempted to try drowning them out.

So, off to the Olympus Service Center we go. The technicians open the camera up to find ants using the entire camera housing, crawling over the circuit boards and generally having a good time in there. The technicians were a good bunch of helpful and friendly guys, and were having a good laugh about my misfortune.

I should get my camera back today minus a 2,000 baht cleaning fee.

###The Jungle Vine

  • Johnny, the Human Jukebox’s top requested songs from “Farangs” for the month of July were “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. Hmm, do you see a trend here or is it just me? The Thais are requesting “Home” by Michael Buble.
  • I enjoyed jazz-trumpeter Leroy Jones’s performance over at The Living Room on Wednesday night in the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, 250 Sukhumvit Rd. He is only in town until July 14. Before the show, I treated myself to a fine meal of glazed chicken breast over potatoes at Rossini’s Italian Restaurant. Excellent.
  • Kevin Wood, the multi-talented MC and manager at Radio City, Patpong Entertainment Zone, is back from his Italian vacation and showing his pictures of the Roman ruins. The ruins are still impressive today.
  • The Queen of Thailand birthday is August 12. Thailand celebrates the Queen’s birthday as their Mother’s Day.
  • The MMail website has a story about Ricky Martin being back in Thailand on August 1. The Latin pop singer is keeping his pledge to help Tsunami victims in this part of the world.
  • Jeff T and Tokyo Joes Blues Bar over on Sukhumvit Soi 24 have been promoting their rib eye and t-bone steaks heavily for the last month or so. I must say I only tried them for the first time last night, and these steaks are great—-and I know my steaks.
  • I had the opportunity to sit in on Dr. Salsa dance classes last Sunday at Noriega’s, Silom Soi 4. After seeing Dr. Salsa instruct the class, I believe Salsa dancing is easier than I thought. At least, Dr. Salsa makes it look easy. He teaches free Salsa lesson at Noriega’s every Sunday night at 7:30 pm.
  • And while on the topic of Salsa dancing… Look for a special series of article from Dr. Salsa beginning this weekend.
  • UPDATE: Birthday party for Jeff and Jay at Tokyo Joes’s Blues Bar tonight. Be there or be square.
