Warning about iPod and Windows

The iPod I was trying to test.

The iPod kept saying, “Do not disconnect.”

A warning to PC users and their new iPod:

A friend of my mine brought over her new iPod. She didn’t have a computer and she wanted me to load it up with songs. I was curious and agreed. I wanted to see what this “iPod” craze was all about.
I open the box and to find the 20Gig Mac + PC iPod purple model and a CD. The CD jacket says to load the software first. I load the CD and its software and follow the on-screen instructions until it says to connect your iPod to the computer. I find a USB cable and plug it into USB 1.1 port my computer. The iPod connects and begins flashing on its screen, “Do not disconnect” and begins formatting its internal memory. So far, so good.

I sit back and wait for it to finish formatting… One hour later, I am still waiting for the iPod to finish formatting.

At this point, I wonder how much longer is it going to take. I am tempted to just start over and plug it into my USB 2,0 port, or even my firewire port, both of which are much, much faster than the current port I am using. However, it is clearly flashing, “Do not disconnect.” Besides, this iPod is not mine and I don’t want to risk damaging it.

So, I wait… and wait… (To be continued… In the meantime, let me know if I am doing something wrong by leaving a comment. Thanks.)
